New Year Newsletter
January 11, 2017
I hope that you had some fun and relaxing days together over break. Thank you for your patience and commitment to our class in my absence. It has been nice to be back in the classroom. I have enjoyed being with the kids and seeing their smiling faces every morning. We have some exiting events and changes occurring in the near future.
We will continue to work on reading as a class and in small groups every day. I am excited to hear the growth they have made. We will be administering reading assessments soon. If you would like to know your child’s reading level or come in and see what their growth and level look like, please send me an email, email@example.com. I will notify you when your child has tested and send you their score or schedule a short meeting. When all students have been tested, leveled reading homework will start to be sent home.
Homework is changing in many areas. First, High Frequency Word Work, will be done on a worksheet in the packet. It says “spelling words” in the directions, please disregard. In place of math journals, we will be completing word problem worksheets included in the packet starting next week.
We are learning Informative Writing this quarter. By the end of the quarter each student will be researching and writing a report on an animal. Introducing the animal, providing at least three facts, and closing the paragraph.
This month we will be starting a new IB Theme, “How the Word Works” in which we will be learning about the unique features that plants and animals have which help them survive. During this unit we will be launching our new program, PLTW (Project Lead the Way), with a unit about animal adaptations. You can find more information about PLTW at https://www.pltw.org/about-us.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this semester. I am very excited to see the growth that they make.
Happy New Year,
